I also love that new Kendrick [Lamar] song [“Humble”]: “Show me somethin’ natural like ass with some stretch marks.” I love that because it’s not “Come sit on my dick, suck on my cock.” I can’t listen to that anymore. That’s what pushed me out of the hip-hop scene a little. It was too much “Lamborghini, got my Rolex, got a girl on my cock” — I am so not that” My Girl Miley

+1

When My Girl Miley made those comments earlier this year/last year/fuck knows <the article you copied that quote from will have a date on it, it’s not hard to date it. I’m starting to think you’re just being intentionally difficult now- Ed> there was predictable outrage, with criticism mainly centring around how a privileged young white girl- who has based a large part of her recent success on at least partilly co-opting hip hop culture when it suited her- has no place passing judgement on rap music

But…

hang on….

I kind of agree with her

Nobody could seriously argue that there isn’t far too much casual misogyny in modern rap music. Perhaps more so than any other genre, perhaps less so (It’s worryingly prevalent in Nu-Skiffle, with The Stiffkey Stable Hands’ Bitch Wanna Scrub My Washboard a particularly galling example), it’s ubiquity in relevance to other types of music isn’t the issue, the fact is that there’s too much of it in rap music

-2

If you accept that though, the issue gets…

awkward, as then the assumption arrises that hip hop is predominantly black genre (similar to every decent genre of music and literally everything that’s been fun, ever) and the controversy more arises from the fact that Cyrus the Virus is about as white as its possible to be without being translucent, and so therefore is somehow unfit to decry a culture that is definitely not ‘hers’. This brings us into dangerous territory. Firstly, if you believe in cultural relativity, that something that’s morally wrong for one group of people is fine for another, you believe that some cultures should be treated differently than others: this is casual segregation and, completely apposite to its believed intention, and creates massive and dangerous gaps between groups of people. The reaction to Miley’s comments merely reinforced the ugly idea that there are separate groups of people in America and it would be far better if never the twain met

The criticism of Miley-Mile’s comments centred almost entirely on her hypocrisy, on the fact that she had appropriated hip hop culture in the past, and was all too happy to utilise similar tropes in her songs and videos to what she later derides when she sees fit. Interesting. Maybe she is a hypocrite. Nobody dared argue whether she was right though

Fuck, this is a ridiculously bigger issue than I have time or energy for, but it would be remiss of me to not mention that probably the most disgusting, misogynistic, sexist, violent and nasty rapper of recent times has been Eminem, and yet because he was white all of his nastiness was lapped up by critics as portraying a ‘character’. Black people are obviously not smart enough to become ‘characters’. I’m going to assume Gooch is a character

Jeez, sorry for that social-justice-cluck-snowflake rant, I hope the pictures stopped you thinking I’d started taking things seriously. I really like ‘Everybody Looking’, the songs are consistently strong, and if you ignore some of the less savoury lyrics that Mr Mane employs, he’s a wonderfully entertaining presence

And constantly telling women to turn around because he’s got something for them to do (because they’re not likely to have anything better to do and he is bored) is worth a good

Gooch is constantly creatively shaping his pronunciations to best fit the flow, and I could happily name about a thousand instances in this piece wasn’t already 45’000 words. A particular favourite comes in the first song:
