26 JPEGMAFIA x Danny Brown: SCARING THE HOES

Yeah, that’s right, ALL CAPS. Because it’s been RAISED RIGHT. Can we please have a collaboration with awakebutstillinbed? Actually, I know I meant to clean up the capitalisation of ‘chaos take the wheel and i am the passenger‘, but can we just have that?? Honestly, use whatever grammar you want, call is ‘@wa[£b()$tIlInPEG’ for all I care. Can Peggy just produce?? JPEGMAFIA producing an emo album?? Nomnomnomnomnom! Give it to me now!!

Oh and apparently there was a different cover of this record?

Nah, Bandcamp one better lol

Bet if I let off these shots, no games
You finna just dance like Goten

This album truly is a colossal meeting of talents. Sure, I’m a fat middle aged white guy who pretends to keep up with new music but essentially just gets a (weak, pathetic, dribbling) hard on for music that sounds like it was released in the early nineties by a Riot grrrl band from Seattle. But these two seem to me like two of the current biggest totems of radical and experimental music. And here they both are! Honestly, this is like if Richey Edwards and Keith Flint wrote a song together in 1994 when I was 10 years old. Now, it’s 2023 and I’m… older than that… and I feel like my white edgelord behind is getting very specifically pandered to!

Richey Edwards and Keith Flint both died though, so maybe Danny & Peggy should watch out. Well, Keith Flint died, the issue with Richey is actually a far more complex and

[I cut out 12’000 words on Richey Edwards’ disappearance. I dunno, didn’t seem relevant?]

That’s JPEGMAFIA’s main fanbase though, surely? White male edgelord losers? We basically vibe to all the trolling lyrics and also namecheck Trump and other major white supremacists in an ‘ironic’ way. Though, because we’re thick as pigshit and don’t understand how context works, our frequent worship of famous racists on Twitter (formally known as… Wait, is this the wrong way around?) doesn’t quite hit with the same irony.

N, no, no, no, I’m being unfair. Loser white edgelords make up only maybe 50% of Peggy’s fanbase – they’re not Denzel Curry, for goodness sake! That was a joke. Half his fanbase are loser white edgelords. The other half are loser white hip-hop ‘connoisseurs’, who like to stroke their lampshade moustaches and doff their Von Dutch cap to the ‘truly outstanding production’ of JPEGMAFIA and how it marks his music as far more refined than the more commercial, more successful, more thuggish output of artists like Young Thug, Lil Dunk, and Taylor Swift during that “You should be getting down to this sick beat” breakdown in Shake it Off. Ewww! These are just rappers that white people like! Even worse: white girls!!

And as for Danny Brown?! I… I… I…

I don’t have any ‘Danny Brown fan’ stereotypes. Maybe he’s big with black people?

I joke! I joke! Christ, is there anything more pathetic than white people slagging off things because “That’s what white people like“? Mate, you’re white. Ah, I see, you’re one of the cool white people, yeah? So you actually like what black people like? Bitching about things being for white people in attempt to make yourself sound in some way less white is the whitest thing imaginable. Have you seen this list? Have you seen the thousands of words I’ve written on Nick Cave and Manic Street Preachers? I’m so white that I’ll complain of people are being too loud in the cinema. I’m so white that I describe myself as ‘colourblind’. I’m so white that I often complain about “white cisgender heterosexual men“.

But… me admitting that… kinda makes me more cool? And therefore more black? I win, anyway.

Anyway, this album is incredible, but you already knew that. It does mostly – predictably, considering his production – sound like a JPEGMAFIA album with Danny Brown guest rapping – though some songs like Burfict! edge towards more of a conflation of both of their signature sounds. Oh, and Vontaze DeLeon Burfict Jr. is an NFL player apparently. There’s some clever reference in there, I’m pretty sure.

Yeah, make sure to keep your Genius open when you listen to the album, as Peggy is always likely to hit you with a

…but if you’re well acquainted with the latest rap/reality TV drama; keep up with advances in sex toys; remember 1960’s sitcoms; are a fan of short-lived and everchanging 00s girl groups (once featuring Dawn motherfucking Richards by the BTW); and recall minor characters from the freaking Flintstones, then you’ll be fine.

Oh, and the sample on that song itself is an ironic statement because…

Fuck it, been writing for seven hours straight today, I’m tired. Gonna relax with some Asian fusion while watching Mad Men. I would have voted Obama again if they let me, y’know?

Shit! I once had a black women round at my flat, so decided to put on ‘Get Out’. That’s the whitest thing ever.

2021 #37, 2020 #162019 #342018 #44 (JPEGMAFIA) 2020 #48, 2019 (no.31), 2016 (no.8) (Danny Brown)

By the BTW, I know technically Danny Brown released an album this year, but I’ve decided to go off the January physical release, so it will feature next year (as long as it isn’t shite)

Metacritic: 86
