Ebrahim Raisi in the heli’, feelin’ foggy
Money, money, money, it made me feel like I’m targeted
Blowing up like I’m IDF, Netty warrants ain’t stoppin’ shit
Is you Harvey, Jeffrey, R. Kelly, or is you opposite?
Say that shit, say that shit
Say that shit, say that shit
Despite the arrest warrants, the IDF is likely to keep getting away with its atrocious horrors while they still have support of the world’s most powerful people, similar to Harvey Weinstein, Jeffery Epstein and R Kelly. Maybe that should be the last word on the Gaza Genocide?
Except it obviously isn’t going to be – wait until you see what album is in 5th place!
It’s been a difficult 2024 for Peggy. It can’t have been easy for them to give up a crown that they’ve proudly held since at least 2016:
Other than that though, things are absolutely looking up. 2024 saw Peggy release the strongest record yet in an already astonishingly strong back catalogue. ‘I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU’ is Peggy’s most diverse, most sonically textured, and still most packed will wall to wall bangers collection of songs that’s they’ve put this particular name to. It evolves from anything they’ve done previously by being a more cohesive and focused collection of songs that both follow similar themes and progress as an arc. And, obviously there are plenty of shots at people like Drake – with Freddie Gibbs being their new favourite target – because Peggy gonna Peggy. The album sees Peggy first boasting, then questioning, then regretting their lifestyle and their relationship behaviours. And Peggy is an artist attuned enough to appreciate how compelling vulnerability can be when expressed through music – closing tracks Don’t Put Anything On the Bible and i recovered from this being by far and away the most nakedly remorseful tracks Peggy’s ever released – which Beyoncé seems to have unfortunately forgotten recently.
It’s also simply Peggy’s best sounding record so far. It’s essentially JPEGMAFIA’s ‘rock rap’ album, with guitar riffs, wild solos and blown out drums. However, this isn’t Jay-Z phoning up Linkin Park and assuming they could just knock together the next Blue Album in a couple of hours, nor is it even in the same league* as horrendous ‘rock’ attempts by rap artists like Lil Wayne and Kid Cudi. This is rock/rap as dreamt up in a fever by that guy from ‘Johnny Got His Gun’ with a box covering where their face used to be, pumped pull of insane early 20th century medical drugs and screaming late at night in the military hospital. Yeah, that good. Peggy’s astonishing continued credits on writing/production/mixing mark them out as the promethazine Prince (‘Purple Lean’?) and gives weight behind their slangs thrown at “Fake-plug-talkin’ Tubi rappers/Got a machine behind ’em, and still they can’t fill up capacity with they raps”.
2024 was also a great year for Peggy, as he finally got to work with their idol and do some “hot girl shit”:
(*the league they’re in would be Division Four of the Hertfordshire Senior County League. And they are struggling)
Peggy produced some songs from Ye and Ty Dolla $ign’s ‘VULTURES 1’ 2024 album. And I should say contributed production, because all the songs on that record seem to have been produced by around a dozen different people. People were predictably in uproar about the largely left leaning Peggy collaborating with the bumbling far right praising Ye, and these complainers are frequently the subject of much of ‘ILDMYFY’s lyrical scorn. My opinion is…
Like, whatever, honestly. JPEGMAFIA makes incredible music, will admit themselves that they would have never even started were it not the influence of Kanye West’s previous exploration of hip-hop’s boundaries. The chance to finally work with their idol must be near impossible to turn down (“Friends, they pass, and some opportunities never come back“) and Peggy will have considered it a sign that they have truly made it. Would I have done it?? Fuck no. Ye’s politics are all over the fucking place, and it’s debatable whether he believes anything besides the continuation of his own career by right wing grifting now that the talent has run dry. Ye’s an absolute embarrassment now and working with him will send out the signal of desperation, whatever your intentions. If Peggy was my friend, I’d be very upset with him.
As it is, Peggy’s made a career out of doing whatever the fuck he wants and denying expectations, and as long as they don’t start supporting genocide, I can just remain happy we’re not friends.
That’s the only wrestling reference on the entire album!! Oh, apart from:
